3 Tips for Smoke Odor Removal

(561) 737-8673

One of the worst things about smoke damage is that it leaves behind an awful smoky odor that is next to impossible to get out. Or so it would seem. However, you just might be able to tackle smoke odor removal or at least reduce it.

If all else fails, you can bring in a professional cleaning and restoration company to help remove the odors.

Take a look at these 3 tips to help with removing smoke odors.

Good Old Baking Soda

Baking soda can be incredibly useful for so many things. It’s no secret that baking soda delivers when it comes to things like odors and deep cleaning. Baking soda is famous for helping to remove odors by absorbing them.

So when it comes to smoke odor removal, you can turn to baking soda to help. We recommend baking soda on various furniture, as well as rugs and carpets. You can even try it on mattresses.

Baking soda is inexpensive, and you probably will need quite a bit depending on how much smoke odor you are treating. Follow these steps:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda generously on all affected areas.
  2. Let the baking soda work for at least an hour. You can gently rub or even walk on the baking soda. This might help it work faster.
  3. Once it has had time to absorb, grab the vacuum and start cleaning up all of the baking soda.

You may need to repeat this process a few times to get out all of the odor, but it should improve with each use.

Try Vinegar

Vinegar is another product that generally doesn’t get the credit it deserves. It’s great for cleaning tough things, and it will help with odor removal, particularly where you can’t use baking soda.

Try vinegar on the walls or on fabrics like pillows and curtains that need treatment. You can create a mixture of vinegar and water. Your mixture should be 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water (75%/25% ratio).

Put the mixture in a bucket or a spray bottle, grab a rag, and start wiping down those mentioned surfaces.

Replace What Can’t Be Saved

There is only so much you can do. If you find that you still have a strong smoke odor, the next step is to bring in professionals to help clean. However, you still might find that some items are just better off being replaced.

It may be necessary to replace things that stubbornly hold on to those odors. Before you give up, try a professional cleaning company. It might save you some money.
