4 Helpful Hints to Prevent Water Damage

(561) 737-8673

There are many times that you may be able to avoid water damage. Of course, there are times that there is nothing you can do. However, if you are proactive, there are several things that you can do to potentially prevent any damage from water.

Check out these four tips!

Gutter Care & Maintenance

One thing that you can do to potentially prevent water damage is to take care of your gutters. Many times, water leaks start because there is improper drainage in or around the home. If you have gutters in place, you need to be sure to take care of them. If the gutters are clogged or cracked, they will not do their job properly.

Cleaning your gutters a couple of times a year can help. When you clean them, this is a good time to also inspect them. Be sure to look them over and take note of any cracks or areas that appear to not be connected properly. Some experts recommending cleaning your gutters once a month, particularly during fall or rainy seasons. However, cleaning them twice a year will make a huge difference, too.

Also, be sure that water flows away from your home.

Check & Maintain Pipes

You can potentially prevent leaks and burst pipes by maintaining your pipes well. This can be more challenging if you're not sure what to look for. You can hire a professional to come inspect your pipes and check for problem areas. Otherwise, you can look for pipes that appear to be in disrepair or that might be leaking.

If you notice dripping or leaks anywhere, you need to get this issue taken care of as quickly as possible so it doesn't get worse. This can help prevent water damage.

In extreme cold, you can also insulate your pipes or use heat tape to prevent pipes freezing.

Check for Water Damage Leaks

Leaking roofs can certainly cause water damage. Many times, we don't even realize the roof is leaking until the water damage becomes noticeable. Most roofs will leak slowly with a drip at first and then progressively worsen. Before your rainy season begins, take the time to inspect the roof and possibly the attic. If you are unsure what to look for, it's a good idea to hire an inspector.

Finding possible leaks in the roof and getting them taken care of can help reduce the likelihood of water damage.

Drainage Mechanisms

Another common cause of water damage in homes is drainage that isn't working properly. In this scenario, sump pumps and French drains could be the problem. It is very important to maintain these and clean them so that they work as they are meant to. Test them twice a year to identify potential problems and avoid damage from water that your pump can't keep up with.
